José Virgilio lives and works in New York and Puerto Rico. Their work has been exhibited internationally including Site/109, the Sheila Johnson Design Center, and Moscow Gallery Network. They received their BFA in Photography from Parsons The New School of Design.

I take portraits to understand, or at least attempt to, what it is like to be a human being. I seek to connect with other individuals in order to learn more about them, and in turn, myself. My work is most importantly instinctive, lead by my emotions and day-to-day experiences, interested in how we, as humans, function on an affectionate level. I am mostly concerned with the lives of queer people and women, for they are the ones I affiliate with, and strive for progress in our communities and personal lives.
