A. Retina Stewart is a multi-disciplinary artist who focuses on depicting culture and members of the hip hop community. Through photography and film, her intimate interviews with her subjects lead to moving images that shed light on a deeper side of each subject's personality. Stewart received her B.F.A in Photography from Parsons
School of Design in May 2015. Stewart currently lives and works in New York City.


The Underground Project is a still and moving image series showcasing black, male, hip-hop artists in their homes. The project gives musicians the platform to express ideas and emotions commonly isolated from hip hop culture because artists are constantly upholding its hyper-masculine standards. I unveil layers of the artist’s personality that are abandoned through content of conversation throughout the duration of the shoot.
