Queerean

For my project, Queerean (Queer + Korean) Jesus, it focuses on my experience as a Korean trans person through portraiture and the appropriation of religious imagery. My investigation of printmaking led me to use cyanotype emulsion to create a water baptism-like feeling to my artwork and use stained glass as the base because of its prominence within churches. My intention is to insert my trans body in religious spaces and materials to relate it to the biblical story of Doubting Thomas. I feel like my trans experience relates to the biblical story of Doubting Thomas; the transformation of Jesus Christ before he was crucified and after, the showing of the scars and justifying that he was the same person he was before. My piece challenges the cis-heternormative culture in Korean society and creates a conversation of seeing Korean trans bodies as a part of a personal religious experience.
