“where you are” is a photographic exploration of the trans domestic space, including images mostly of strangers and acquaintances. The construction of these images, made extensively visible through my use of vibrant visuals, long exposure and the presence of photographic equipment, speaks towards the artifice of documentary. The transparency of this process is important as it brings visibility to my own marginalized community. To be seen and understood as a trans person is a radical act of existence that comes with taking time to be present.

MJ Ortiz is a Colombian-American photographer based in the New York City area. Their work explores intimacy, adolescence, and queer domestic narratives through documentary and self-portraiture. Ortiz will receive a BFA in Photography and a BA in Literary Studies from The New School in 2024.
