Aleyana Mitchell

“Heaven Brings the Sweetest Days That Bind Us,” a photographic series, explores grief and memorialization within my family after the unexpected passing of my mother’s youngest brother, Darece. Employing a combination of collage and portraiture, this series reconstructs the legacy and memories of the past. By reimagining archival imagery of my uncle with the inclusion of glitter and documenting the state of my family in the present, this series encourages my family’s healing and shows the complexities of Black grief. 

Aleyana Mitchell is a multimedia artist based in New York. Born in Baltimore, Mitchell creates lens-based work that explores the community in which they call home.
