Joey Bowser
Stemming from my passion for science fiction and my desire for repatriation and rapprochement with Black and Mexican cultures and communities I haven’t known since birth, the photography series “Repatriating the Outlier” voyages through my feelings of abandonment, isolation, and misidentification by utilizing microscopic imaging. All images have been coated in Mod Podge and are displayed in wooden frames that reference both the historical medium of oil painting and the familial tradition of the portrait wall. In the absence of contextual information, viewers are forced to consider what portraiture can render visible beyond the natural eye.
Joey Bowser voyages the microscopic expanse that encircles us, seeking shelter. Their photography exposes the ephemerality of nature to the naked eye, creating a convergence of science and art.
