Sophia Brown
“Li2CO3 (Lithium Carbonate)” is an evolving body of work through which I explore the intricacies of my relationship to bipolar disorder, reconciling with my diagnosis. Photographs, ranging from self-portraits to chaotic stacks of prescription bottles, are paired with sculptural objects made from psychiatric materials -—medication, labels, packaging–—that form the contours of my lived experience. In this way, I am able to articulate my quotidian rituals and repetitions, rage and desperation, creating visual manifestations of my mental illness and demonstrating the delicate equilibrium between chaos and order that I constantly negotiate.
Sophia Brown is a New York–based interdisciplinary artist who works with photography, printmaking, and installation.
