Nicole Bartnikowski
As a ceremony to the cyclical nature of life, Foraging Through
Roots explores the interconnection between the ecological, economical, and the spiritual. With a focus on materiality, this work reimagines the tactile processes of cyanotype printing and papermaking as sacred rituals. These rituals become acts of reciprocity, expressing gratitude to the plants and spirits that have supported them up until this point. Drawing on the folk textile crafts of the Polish countryside, the act of sewing becomes a diasporic connection to ancestry. Stitched together, the images represent a rite of passage that preserves their queerness within a larger historical narrative.
Nicole Bartnikowski (they/them) is a Polish-American multidisciplinary artist based in the NYC area. Working with tactile processes, their image-based work explores the relationship between culture, spirituality, and the natural world.
