Grief inhabits the land and bodies of Vietnam; it scars, burns, and kills. Mom, Can You Hear The Flowers
Blooming? honors the life Huynh’s mom has lived, while simultaneously examining the structures of grief created by war. Through gestures of collage and image transfer, the work imagines an alternative landscape where the artist and the artist’s mom are liberated from these tragedies. Within this reimagined land, their Vietnamese bodies and histories are reclaimed, protected from the violence of the white gaze. The work honors alternate ways of knowing and remembering-ways that are not physically tangible, but which preserve concealed Vietnamese histories.
Trâm Huỳnh is a multimedia artist from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Huỳnh’s work presents a hopeful deconstruction of the white gaze and the systems that bestow themselves upon Vietnamese bodies.
