Alicia (Shanying) Zhu

Scarecrow is a multimedia narrative that unfolds across the mediums of performance, photography, experimental music, and alternative processes. In the work, family histories are carried, repeated and quietly transformed across generations within domestic rituals and private emotional landscapes. Documented in video, the performers’ bodies become vessels for lived and inherited trauma. Photography captures stillness as a way to freeze memory, and archival family photographs appear through sound and projection as traces of family history. The final stage of the work physically manipulates the image to reflect on how memory fractures and fades over time.

Alicia (Shanying) Zhu was born in Shanghai. She is an image maker who explores the body as a site of memory, inheritance, and fracture.
