Anyza

Beparwah Ladies is a photo series that explores societal gender expectations culturally imposed on Indian women, and how they shape and determine their roles and personas. Inspired by the artist’s experience growing up in a multicultural environment, as well as her relationships with her mother and grandmother, the series explores concepts like ‘ladylike’ behaviour, body language, class, femininity, and traditional attire. 

The title—Beparwah, meaning carefree/reckless, and Ladies, connoting women with refined behaviour belonging to a higher class—creates a deliberate oxymoron, which perfectly embodies this series of work.

Anyza is an Indian-Dutch Photographer who explores her heritage by drawing inspiration from her experience of growing up as a woman. Anyza will be continuing her practice in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
