Clara Kraus

Choose Her A Name She Will Answer To examines the unstable boundary between maternal influence and individual identity, drawing on a practice of collaborative portraiture between the artist and her mother. Moving between self portraiture, documentation, and fabricated moments of internal fantasy and escape, this constructed collaborative portrait explores a relationship shaped by intimacy, secrecy, and emotional interdependence. Engaging with Adrienne Rich’s concept of matrophobia, the images visualize a daughter’s struggle to recognize where the mother ends and the self begins.

Clara Kraus is an artist from Honolulu, Hawaii. She uses photography as a method of inquiry into selfhood and authorship.
