Girls & Dolls presents a film and photographic portrait series that explores the impact of dolls on girlhood, identity, and ideas of femininity. By documenting and interviewing girls and women about their personal doll collections, as well as re-imagining the sense of play they embody through cinematic form, Girls & Dolls celebrates these objects as an extension of the self. Looking at girlhood from the vantage point of the early stages of womanhood, Roose highlights how dolls function as role models, sources of inspiration, and mirror images of their girl counterparts—brought to life and given character, agency, and possibility with love and play.
