Yang Yang

Through photography, cyanotype, collage, and sculptural installation, After Image: The Night We Left the First Ash of Fire is a conceptual project that moves between simulacra and dissolution. Taking the act of burning incense, a gesture associated with ritual as its focal point, it uses the dispersal of smoke and the residue of ash to symbolically reflect on the transient and immaterial. Unexposed film strips similarly refuse to cohere into legible images. Instead what is depicted is fragmented, inverted, or obscured. Marking a rupture within representation itself, the project unsettles the authority of image-making systems, opening up a space where visibility falters and meaning remains unresolved.
