Luke Smillie
My film centers on the themes of aging, memory, loss, and grief. My fascination is with the elusive nature of memory and its inaccessibility as one grows older. Within my work I strive to visualize the transmutation of one’s memory, and its effects on the self, that occur with the onset of illness and age. I am interested in seeing something emotionally, in making work lined with subtle glimpses of hope and tenderness. Sometimes all we have in life are small glimpses of hope, and I want my art to communicate this.
Luke Smillie is a New York-based artist working with photography and video. His work features rich colors and striking imagery, with the goal of creating art that glides frictionlessly just above the real world, lined with reality yet sealed off from contact with it, to have a meaningful effect on people’s lives.
