My thesis project, Homework, is a compilation of images I made at home. It is a collection of photographs demonstrating my mother’s insistence to work. By using the camera as an instrument of documentation, I am hoping to emphasize the role of women migrant workers within the Asian diaspora while also questioning how ‘work’ is defined within the Asian American community. In today’s hyper-capitalistic world where labor equates worth, but housework does not equate labor, how can women like my mother be seen? Homework is an homage to all the migrant women who have labored tirelessly so that their families could survive, it is a recognition of their insistence to stay, to work, and to build futures not yet imagined.
