Matt Stejbach

My relationship to photography is complex, serious, and eternal. Since I can remember, I have always been attracted to the camera and the act of image making: the camera’s ability to create permanence in vision. In growing as an artist, I have learned that my process is a direct intervention in photography; instead of taking a photograph, I make a photograph. As I translate mental imagery to visual subject matter, photography becomes a performance in constructing an image for the camera, rather than a means of rendering reality through the camera. I construct these images in the imagination then produce them through using a variety of creative systems. With an affinity for fashion, glamour, and the Surreal, my artistic style is concerned more with visual composition and oddity than it is with subject matter.
