Quinn Batley

Quinn Batley is a photographer and videographer based in New York City. Exploring themes of physical closeness and vulnerability in contemporary youth culture — specifically within the New York skate scene — the artist’s work subverts the stereotypes that codify skateboarding as tough and necessarily epic. He notes, “this generation is not afraid to be intimate — to hold, support, and love each other.”

Batley grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he began skateboarding at 8 years old and shooting photos at eleven. Batley’s work is centered around documenting his community — a diverse aggregation of backgrounds and age groups. Through the process of recording life around him, the artist has found that he is most drawn to the quiet moments that occur “in-between” events, rather than the events themselves. The resulting images depict fleeting, intimate scenes that are at once current and timeless.
